Pentair X-Flow Reverta is a process where the incoming flow may have fibrous materials which may be caught at the entrance of tubular membrane elements. In an automated format, the flow can be alternated and can be fed to both sides of the module. In this way, potential caught material will not block the membrane element any longer and the process of filtration will continue.

typical use

Anaerobic MBR uses a digester without oxygen. It provides biogas as a by-product, and uses inside-out tubular ultrafiltration membranes to produce high quality permeate. By applying the Reversal Flow Processing (RFF), excellent permeate is produced and at the same time the system remains closed for oxygen, even with fibrous material entrapped in the biological system.

The same applies for aerobic processes, where similar fibrous material can be caught. With the Reversal Flow Processing the system can be built and operated with an answer to hard to remove fibrous materials within the biological process.


Reversal Flow Processing uses tubular membrane elements. The Pentair scope consists of a scalable system range optimized for high-strength streams, the X-Flow Compact 33V (a tubular 5.2 mm ultrafiltration membrane equipped with the patented Helix flux enhancement technology) plus engineering, commissioning and process optimization.

Fields of application

Developed for both low-strength, high-strength and high-solids (industrial) wastewater streams.  Anaerobic MBR is at its best with a high COD (>7000 ppm) and starts with a daily COD load of approxiametely 3000 kg. With >98% COD removal, the effluent is of good quality and ready for reuse, while the biogas is a valuable green energy source. 
In case of aerobic MBR solutions, the application of the Reversal Flow Processs will be applicable to those with hard to remove fibrous material. The Crossflow or Airlift MBR could be more suitable treatment technologies, even though both are operated aerobically.
